Ortakoy Mosque (Buyuk Mecidiye Mosque) is located along the Bosphorus. It is one of the important landmarks of Istanbul. The original mosque was built in 17th century. This mosque was built by the order of Sultan Abdulmecit in 1854-1856 on the site of the perevious one. The architects of mosque were Armenian father and son, Garabet Amira Balyan(the father) and Nigogayos Balyan(the son). Very valuable crystal chandeliers hang from ceiling also interior of the mosque was embellished with calligraphy executed by Sultan Abdulmecit himself who was a master calligrapher. |
